Excise Tax Registration Overview

Excise tax plays a crucial role in the tax framework of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It is an indirect tax applied to certain goods that are considered harmful to health or the environment. In the UAE, excise tax targets items such as tobacco products, energy drinks, and carbonated beverages. This tax is levied either at the time of import, production, or, in some instances, when goods are stored. The Federal Tax Authority (FTA) oversees and regulates the excise tax system in the UAE.

Who Should Register for Excise Tax in the UAE?

Under UAE excise tax regulations, the following entities are required to register for excise tax:

  • Importers: Individuals or businesses bringing excise goods into the UAE. These goods include tobacco products, electronic smoking devices, carbonated beverages, energy drinks, and sweetened drinks.
  • Producers: Entities manufacturing excise goods within the UAE.
  • Stockpilers: Individuals or companies holding excise goods in the UAE for which excise tax has not yet been paid. This applies to stockpiling for business purposes.
  • Warehouse Keepers: Those managing excise goods within a registered excise warehouse or zone in the UAE.

In essence, anyone involved in the import, production, storage, or warehousing of excise goods in the UAE is required to register for excise tax, unless specifically exempted.
